Description
Long Close is a house dating from the 16th century or earlier, with alterations in the late 17th century. A northeast rear wing was added in the 19th century, and a 20th-century wing to the east end and rear northwest corner reused older timbers. The house is timber-framed, with the frame exposed on the first floor. The northeast wing is of red brick and the ground floor is also brick-cased. The roofs are steep, covered in old red tiles, except for the northeast wing which has a slate roof.
The long, two-storey house is set back from the road, facing south. It features a large external gable chimney on the west side, and an internal chimney located near the middle of the house, rising through the rear slope of the roof. The south front has three windows on each floor. The first floor displays close-studding with plastered panels. The house has six structural bays, with a gabled porch to the front door, the east side of which is marked by a two-light window. The windows are flush casements with lattice leaded glass, incorporating 18th-century iron opening lights. Most windows are three-light, although the central ground floor windows are four-light. The west gable reveals a clasped-purlin roof structure supported on collars.
