Description

A block of five small houses, named Howard Cottage (No. 1), Seymour Cottage (No. 2), Boleyn Cottage (No. 3), Aragon Cottage (No. 4), and Cleeves Cottage (No. 5), was built in 1818 for William Wilshere, the Lord of the Manor. The construction was undertaken by Wellers of Hitchin for a cost of £200. The houses were renovated, re-thatched, and had rear extensions added in 1974 by the Hertfordshire Buildings Preservation Trust. The houses are of timber frame construction with roughcast rendering, a stuccoed plinth, and steep thatched half-hipped roofs with decorative ridges. A slate roof covers the rear lean-to. They form a row of ornate cottages facing east. There are three red brick chimneys rising from the ridge and one from the north gable. The east front features seven eyebrow dormer windows, each with two lights. Five boarded doors are set within narrow frames, with foresteps leading up to them, and there are ten flush, two-light casement windows, each fitted with an external boarded shutter that folds down from the sill. Two dormers are located at the rear.
