Description
Shaw Green Farm House is a house with origins dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century, which has been extended and altered in the 18th and 19th centuries. It underwent further alterations in 1928, as indicated by the date on the rainwater head. The building features a timber frame with brick additions, all covered in roughcast, and has a machine-tiled roof. Originally, it was likely composed of two cells, with an 18th-century addition and further enlargement in the 19th century. The house is primarily single-storey but now includes parts that are two storeys, one storey, and an attic.
The original range is located at the rear, with early bays to the left and a steeply pitched roof. The windows include scattered 20th-century flush frame casements and three- and four-light dormers. At the centre, there is a full-height 19th-century gabled projection featuring three-light casements. The house has a cross axial ridge stack positioned between the two left bays and end stacks, all dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. The left stack has one diagonally set flue and is external, while the others have paired diagonal flues; the right stack is made of extruded red and gault brick. The left gable end displays exposed purlins and a ground floor lean-to addition.
Behind the main structure is a parallel range that now serves as the entrance elevation, consisting of four bays. There are two 19th-century gables on the right; the left gable features the entrance, while the right gable is broader and slightly projecting. The two bays to the left have gabled dormers and 20th-century two-light casements. Attached to the right is a lower gabled dairy. Inside, the house has exposed framing and a stop-chamfered axial bearer.
