Description

Nos 81 and 82 on Tilehouse Street are notable buildings with historical significance. No 81 may have originally served as the Tylers' Guildhall and features much work from the 15th century. In contrast, No 82 appears to date from the 17th century, although it may have been connected to No 81 earlier. No 81 has undergone significant alterations in the 19th century and is built over two storeys beneath a hipped tile roof. The ground floor originally had three three-light mullioned windows with four-centred arches, each light adorned with cinque-foil stonework. Currently, the northern window is blind with plaster infilling, the central window has sashed casements added between the stone mullions, and a door has been cut into the lower half of the southern window. The upper floor is plastered and features two 18th-century sashed windows. The combined facade of both buildings is cross-gabled at the west and east ends, with a gabled dormer above the middle section. No 82 is plastered and pargetted, also two storeys high with an oversailing upper floor and two casement windows. A carriageway on the right reveals the timber construction. Nos 70 to 75, 77, 78, and 81 to 84 form a cohesive group.
