Description

9 and 11 Butcher Row are two historic buildings dating from the 15th to 16th centuries, with No 11 being recased in the late 18th to early 19th century. No 9 is two storeys tall with an attic, featuring gabled tile-hung upper floors. It has one window on the upper floors, a sliding sash in the attic, and a flush framed sash with glazing bars on the ground floor. A modern shop front obscures an overhang.

No 11 has a three-storey brick front with a hipped old tile roof. The upper floors have superimposed canted bays with a pent roof above, featuring sash lights with glazing bars, thicker on the first floor, all set in architrave surrounds from the late 18th century. The ground floor also has a modern shop front.

The side elevation of No 9 shows an overhang with a slate-hung first floor and irregular windows. The New Canal side features an early 19th-century refacing of No 9, which includes a slate-hung first floor and a stucco frieze with flutes and roundels, carried over a centered canted bay window. The ground floor has flush framed sash windows.

The front of No 11 facing the New Canal is brick-faced, with superimposed canted bays on the upper floors and blocked windows on either side. The ground floor features a 19th-century tripartite sash window, a mid-19th-century four-panel door, and a rectangular fanlight, all framed by a pilaster surround, frieze, and projecting cornice.

Nos 9 and 11 form a group with Nos 7 and 9 Fish Row.
