Description

John Halle's Hall, now serving as the entrance to The Odeon Cinema, dates back to the 15th century, with a front that was imitated in timber in 1881. The building features an elaborate framework, stands three storeys high with gables, and is adorned with ornate carved bargeboards and a finial. It has eight light lattice casements on both floors, pargetting on the side panels, and carved beam ends that extend over the edges.

The remains of the Hall include a two-storey outer lobby, which is the current entrance to the cinema, constructed in a restored timber-framed style. This lobby has an open gallery on the first floor and a heavily beamed ceiling. It leads into the Hall, which retains much of its original character. The Hall itself is two storeys high with an open timber roof featuring an elaborate cusped bracing pattern on the purlins, supported by moulded pointed arched beams. The east wall contains original tall stone mullioned windows with modern lead lights, and there is one smaller similar window on the west wall. From the Hall, two doors open into a lower inner room that has a heavy moulded beamed ceiling.

The exterior of the east front is made of ashlar stone and features two moulded stone mullioned windows with pointed arched cusped heads set within a rectangular frame of coved moulding, along with a small arched door to the left, which has a similar design and a trefoil spandrel ornament. The west side of the Hall is constructed of brick and flint, with one small stone mullioned window on the left, also featuring pointed cusped heads. The Hall is topped with an old tile roof.

John Halle's Hall and Nos 17 and 19 form a group.
