Description
Homewood is a house built in 1900 by Sir Edwin Lutyens for the Dowager Countess of Lytton. It features a mix of vernacular and Georgian revival styles. The ground floor is made of whitewashed brick, while the upper floor is weatherboarded. The roof is covered with plain tiles and has red brick chimney stacks. The windows are wood mullioned and transomed, with leaded lights.
The entrance front showcases three gable ends, each with a cross window. There is a central tunnel arch leading to the doorways, which is topped with a segmental pediment and flanked by rusticated side piers. A suspended flat arch is positioned between the imposts. Single-storey end pavilions echo the rusticated piers and feature small leaded lights.
On the garden elevation, the centre is recessed and includes an applied loggia supported by four Ionic pilasters. Above this is a deep eaves adorned with mutules and panels. The ground floor has arched and mullioned French windows, while the first floor contains five two-light windows. Beneath the central eaves, single-storey side wings with rusticated piers and angle dressings wrap around, and their inner parts are open loggias.
On the service side, which faces east, there is a central turret with one window and a two-light attic window, while the ground floor features a pentice roof. Inside, the house includes fireplace surrounds and cornices designed in an early 18th-century style.
