Description

This milestone, located on the west side of Cambridge Road (B1368), is one of 16 milestones established on the old route from Cambridge to London by W. Warren between 1728 and 1732. It was set up under a bequest from Dr. W. Mowse, Master of Trinity Hall, Cambridge, in 1586 for the maintenance of roads in the Cambridge area. This particular milestone, known as the 13th, is a white freestone pillar approximately 1 meter high, with a square shape, chamfered corners, and a rounded pyramidal cap.

On the upper part of the front face, there is an iron plate with a segmental head, which was affixed around 1864, possibly designed by McAdam for the Wadesmill Turnpike Trust. The plate displays the distances: 'LONDON 38/BARKWAY 3/CAMBRIDGE 13'. Below this, part of the original inscription is still visible, which reads 'MILES TO CAMBRIDGE' along with a low relief pointing hand and the date 1732 in Roman numerals.
