Description

This milestone is one of 16 along the historic road from Cambridge to London, established by W. Warren between 1728 and 1732. It was set up under a bequest from Dr. W. Mowse, who served as Master of Trinity Hall, Cambridge, from 1552 to 1553, for the maintenance of local roads. This particular milestone, the 14th, is a white freestone pillar approximately 1 meter high, square in shape with a rounded pyramidal cap.

On the upper part of the front face, there is an iron plate with a segmental head, added around 1804, likely designed by McAdam for the Wadesmill Turnpike Trust. The plate displays the inscriptions 'LONDON 37/BARKWAY 2/CAMBRIDGE 14'. Below this, part of the original inscription is still visible, which includes 'CAMBRIDGE' incised with a low relief pointing hand and the date 1732 in Roman numerals.
