Description
The War Memorial in Barley, North Hertfordshire, was officially unveiled in 1919. It is constructed from stone and takes the form of a Celtic cross with a square shaft and plinth, featuring simple and plain architectural details. The cross and plinth are set on a triple-stepped base, which is situated within a rectangular, terraced, walled enclosure that is accessed by steps from the north.
The front face of the cross shaft is inscribed with the words, 'IN PERPETUAL REMEMBRANCE OF THOSE WHO ? BORE THEIR PART IN THE GREAT WAR AND IN DEEPEST HOMAGE TO THOSE WHO FELL'. The names of twenty soldiers who lost their lives in the Great War are listed on the plinth. The first step bears the inscription, 'GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS ? MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS'. Additionally, a later addition on the third step commemorates Ronald Eric Ninehan, who was killed in action on July 8th, 1944.
