Description
The milestone south of the White House, dated 1731, is a Grade II listed structure located on the west side of Cambridge Road (B1368) in Great and Little Chishill. It is made of limestone and features a cast iron inset plaque that is inscribed with the distances to London (39 miles), Barkway (4 miles), and Cambridge (12 miles). Above the distances, there is a black painted inscription indicating the direction to Cambridge, with the date displayed in Roman numerals below. This milestone is designated as No. 12 and is one of sixteen milestones that were established along the old road from Cambridge to London. These were set up by William Warren between 1727 and 1732, following the bequest of Dr. William Mowse, who was the Master of Trinity Hall, Cambridge, from 1552 to 1553, for the maintenance of roads in and around Cambridge.
