Description
The milestone on the civil parish boundary is located on the west side of Barkway Cambridge Road (B1368). It is one of 16 milestones along the historic route from Cambridge to London, established by W. Warren between 1728 and 1732. This initiative was funded by the bequest of Dr. W. Mowse, who was the Master of Trinity Hall, Cambridge, from 1552 to 1553, aimed at maintaining roads in and around Cambridge. The milestone is a freestone pillar, approximately half a metre high and square in shape, though partially buried. On the front, there is an iron plate with a segmental head, which was attached around 1804, likely designed by McAdam for the Wadesmill Turnpike trust. The plate displays the distances: 'LONDON 36/BARKWAY 1/ CAMBRIDGE 15'.
