Description

The stable block and stable flat at Cokenach House were built around 1716 for R Chester. The clock tower was added in 1836, and the building was extended in the late 19th century. It is constructed of red brick with orange brick dressings and features a steeply pitched hipped tiled roof with a timber tower. The façade is arranged in three sections, each with three bays that break forward towards the center. The building has two storeys and a plinth.

On the ground floor, there is a central round-headed opening with a gauged brick arch and keystone, flanked by sash windows with thick glazing bars. The first floor has six-pane casements, all with open moulded frames and gauged brick flat-arched heads. The left bay includes a round-headed coach opening with double doors and a gauged brick head, while a similar opening on the right is blocked. The eaves feature oversailing brick courses, and there is a central pediment with a clock dated 1896.

At the ridge, a large tower has a tile-hung lower stage, a cornice to the upper stage with louvred boarding, and brackets supporting an ogee roof. Above this is a small open belfry with a leaded ogee cap and a weathervane finial. A late 19th-century stock brick addition to the left has an entrance flanked by small-pane casements on the first floor.

At the rear, the central bay breaks forward with a round-headed door and upper small-pane casements, and there are kneelers at the gable parapet. The left side has an open ground floor with first-floor small-pane casements and an external stack, while the right side features a hay loft door with a pulley. Insurance markers are present over the central openings at both the front and rear. The interior has not been inspected.
