Description
Owlswood Cottage is a house, originally a groom's cottage associated with Newsells Park. The core of the building dates to the mid-17th century, with later additions in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is timber-framed with a brick base and rendered walls, topped by a steeply pitched thatched roof. The original layout was a three-bay lobby entry house, to which two bays were added to the right. The cottage is one storey with an attic. The central bay of the original section has a recessed plank door, a twelve-pane fixed casement to the left, a three-light flush frame casement further left, a two-light casement, and a two-light dormer with eyebrow thatch to the right. The added bays feature scattered casement windows and a separate entrance. A ridge stack has been rebuilt at its head. The left gable end, facing the road, has a high brick and flint plinth, two-light casements with exposed plates, and visible purlins. The rear elevation has a 19th-century stack in the entrance bay, along with two-light casements and an entrance. Inside, the cottage reveals exposed timber framing, including bar stop chamfered bearers and joists, passing tension braces, and a re-used 18th-century cyma moulded fireplace lintel. Other features include jowled posts, cambered tie beams, and angled queen posts to the principals. Newsells Park House is not listed as a separate building.
