Description
Live and Let Live is a house that was once a public house, dating back to the 16th century, with alterations made around 1600 and further extensions in the 19th century and 1974. The building features a timber frame that is plastered, with panelled fan pargetting and a dark weatherboarded apron. It has a steep thatched roof adorned with a fancy ridge and wide overhanging eaves.
This low H-plan house is set back slightly from the road and faces west. The northern half retains elements of the original L-plan house, which includes a storeyed crosswing and a short single-storey and garret hall range. There is a near contemporary rear half-bay to the wing, which contains a winding stair and an internal chimney at the junction of the wings. The first extension doubled the length of the hall range, with a short 1.5-storey section that is slightly taller. The second extension added another 1.5-storey crosswing, which encloses the chimney at the southern end of the first extension.
The windows are 2- and 3-light flush casements, with four in the recessed centre, one on each floor of the southern wing gable, and one on each floor of the northern crosswing gable. The ground floor window in the northern crosswing gable is offset to the right, leading to a gabled projecting tiled porch. Inside, the house features jowled posts, clasped-purlin roofs, and chamfered cross beams with ogee stops in the northern wing.
