Description

No. 8 Church End is a house located in Rushden, dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century, with extensions added in the late 17th century or early 18th century and the 20th century. The building features an exposed timber frame with some brick casing, weatherboarding, and rendered infill, topped with a tiled roof. Originally, it was a two-cell, three-bay lobby entry structure with an additional bay added to the right. It has one storey and an attic, with a central entrance that includes an open gabled porch and weatherboarding below the ground floor sill level. The small panel framing has fairly large scantling, while the right bay features smaller scantling and passing tension braces.

On the ground floor, there are three-light casements and one additional casement immediately to the left of the door, all with flush frames and leaded lights. Two brick buttresses have been added to the left bay. The casements are also present in gabled dormers. A large ridge stack with a square base supports four diagonally set flues, while the right end has a brick wall and the left end is weatherboarded. There are 20th-century additions to the rear. Inside, the ground floor includes a stop-chamfered binding beam, original stairs located behind the stack, and arched braces supporting the central collar of the clasped purlin roof. The building was formerly known as the Rose and Crown Inn.
