Description

Windmill House is a Grade II listed building located in Rushden. It was originally a house, formerly serving as a Post Office and dwelling, dating from the late 15th or 16th century. The hall was floored and heated in the late 17th century, and around 1800, it was divided into two dwellings. The building was extended in the 20th century.

Constructed with a timber frame and rendered exterior, Windmill House features a thatched roof with some tiled sections. The structure includes a two-bay hall with a cross wing to the left, standing one storey with an attic, while the cross wing is two storeys high. The entrance is located at the lower end of the hall, accessed through a plank and muntin door sheltered by a thatched hood supported by timber posts. Above the entrance, there is a secondary date 'T 1730' in plaster.

To the right of the entrance, there is a single leaded light in the service bay, while to the left, a three-light flush frame casement window is present. The attic features a three-light window with eyebrow thatching. An axial red brick ridge stack has been inserted at the lower end of the hall. The jettied cross wing on the left has its own plank and muntin door, along with two and three-light casements with leaded panes on the ground floor. A curved bracket supports the right end of the jetty.

The first floor of the cross wing is pargetted with a diamond pattern and includes a two-light casement, along with exposed plates and purlins. The right slope of the wing and the left end of the hall roof are covered with tiles. A catslide roof covers a lean-to addition at the left end of the cross wing, which also has a hipped roof at the rear. Additionally, there is a lean-to addition at the rear of the hall range and a 20th-century one-storey link to a 20th-century wing with a gable front and tiled roofs.
