Description
Dixies Farmhouse and Dixies are a late 15th or early 16th century farmhouse, now divided into two houses, located on the south side of High Street, Ashwell. Originally a hall house, it features jettied cross wings at each end, with a later extension on the right end and to the rear, dating to the 17th century. The building was altered in the 19th century. It is timber framed with plastered walls and a plain tile roof. The two storeys are punctuated by four 19th-century sash windows with flush moulded frames. A door towards the left has a roll-moulded frame and a flat hood. Canted sash windows are present on the left and right sides. A further 19th-century door is located below the right-hand cross wing (Dixies). Curved brackets support the jetties of both wings. Cusped bargeboards are visible, along with two 19th-century ridge chimney stacks featuring angled shafts. A single-storey addition, likely originally a barn, extends for one or two bays on the right side and includes a 17th-century internal stack where it joins the wing. Internally, the roof shows a crown post at the junction with the right cross wing, and a further crown post at the right end. The rear elevation demonstrates a 17th-century gabled addition on the left and an 18th-19th century hipped bay on the right.
