Description

The former stables, walls of the adjoining walled garden, and vaulted alcove at Putteridge Bury date from the 18th century or early 19th century, with renovations to the stables around 1908 when the house was rebuilt by Ernest George and Alfred Yeates. The buildings are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with some stone copings and roofs made of stone slabs. There is a painted wooden clock turret atop the structure.

This irregular group of single-storey buildings is located to the west of the service block and features steep stone slab roofs and red brick chimneys with round-headed recesses. The south part has round-headed recessed windows and a shaped gable parapet, along with an off-centre tall octagonal wooden turret that has an arcaded design, a cubical clock stage, and an open octagonal arcaded cupola topped with a bell and iron vane, all painted in black and white.

The large rectangular garden is enclosed by walls that rise to 3 meters high, reaching 4 meters at the west end of the north side. Central gate piers are located at the west end. The west wall extends south and includes a semi-circular brick alcove with a vaulted 4-centred hemi-cycle head, providing space for seating. This section of the wall forms the western end of a terrace walk and features stucco pilasters at each end that rise higher than the stone coping. There are small gateways with cast iron gates near the southeast corner, and a two-bay open ironwork screen extends south at this corner, supported by square openwork cast iron pylons on stone bases linked to the stone side parapets of a flight of steps.
