Description
Two adjacent houses, number 6 and number 8 (Fairmile), stand within St Paul’s Walden. Number 8 dates from the 18th century or earlier, while number 6 was built in the early 19th century. They are constructed with roughcast rendering, with a red brick flank wall to the north side of number 6. The roofs are steeply pitched, covered in old red tiles, although the roof of number 6 has been renewed and the rear slope of number 8 is lower and slated, to accommodate a rear extension.
Number 8 is a house of 1½ storeys with two windows facing east. It is wider than number 6 and features large external gable chimneys and two gabled dormers at the eaves, each with a small-paned casement window. The ground floor has two flush casement windows, with a further two small-paned windows above. A central, battened door is set within a tiled, gabled porch. Number 6 is a smaller, two-storey house adjoining number 8 but situated lower down the hillslope. It has two windows to the first floor and two-light flush Yorkshire sliding casement windows with small panes. A boarded door is set within a heavy frame, sheltered by a segmental arch and hood. There is a two-light, small-paned casement window to the right of the door. An internal north gable chimney is present.
