Description

Trafalgar Cottage is a house built around 1815, featuring the name 'TRAFALGAR/COTTAGE' on a stone plaque above the door. It is constructed of red brick with a hipped slate roof and has a plastered wide eaves soffit. The house is two stories tall with a cellar and has a double-pile plan, end chimneys, and a central entrance facing east. The symmetrical east front has three windows, a plat band, and rubbed flat arches above the windows. The windows are recessed sash windows with six-over-six panes, and there are small cast iron railings on the first floor. Below the left-hand window, there is a cellar arch, and the round arched doorway features a divided two-panelled door with a fanlight above. On the south side, there are twin sashes on the first floor under a single arch between the chimney projections. At the rear, there is a small original two-story closet projecting from the north corner. The interior is elegantly designed, with front and rear drawing rooms on the south side (featuring sliding doors that act as shutters to the rear bay) and a dining room and kitchen on the north side. There is a wide hall that runs from front to rear with a single cut-string staircase. The house also has double-hung panelled shutters throughout. It was built for the retirement of an officer who served with the fleet at the Battle of Cape Trafalgar, with two servant blocks located up the hill.
