Description
These are thatched outbuildings located at Frays, 35 metres to the south-southwest of the house. The buildings date from the middle part of the 16th century and consist of a two-bay cottage, a three-bay woodshed from the 18th century on the west side, and a two-bay stable from the 18th century on the east side. The structures have timber frames set on low brick sills, with the middle part being roughcast on the south front, while the woodshed and stable are dark weatherboarded. The north side of the middle part is cased in 18th-century red brick in header bond. The buildings feature a steep thatched roof that is hipped at the north end and stepped along its length.
The range of buildings forms a long narrow enclosure on the south side of a yard, with the cottage facing south and the stable and open-fronted woodshed facing north. The cottage is one and a half storeys tall, consisting of two structural bays, and includes a winding stair in the northeast corner. The living room is located in the north bay and has an axial beam and a large open fireplace that projects into the south bay, with a small larder to the north of the fireplace. There is an external door leading to narrow storehouses behind the chimney in the south bay, and a two-light casement window to the left of the door into the north bay. The upper floor is boarded but currently lacks lighting, and the chimney is capped off below the roof.
Inside, the cottage features exposed framing in all walls and remnants of wattle-and-daub infill above a later flint gable wall at the south end. It has jowled posts and long straight braces, with quadrant braces supporting the open front of the wood store. A small door in the rear wall provides access to the garden on the south side and to the cottage. The stable to the north has two small windows and a plank door in between, with unjowled posts and a clasped-purlin roof, providing stabling for three horses. There are also two high windows at the rear of the stable.
