Description

Wood Hall is a large house built around 1840, with extensions added in the mid-19th century and alterations in the 20th century. It is constructed of stock brick and features a shallow pitched hipped slate roof. The house has a double-pile layout and stands two storeys tall, with basements and attics.

The front facade has seven windows and a central entrance that is highlighted by a pedimented Greek Doric porch. The door is set back in a recess and is topped by a traceried, semi-circular fanlight. On either side of the entrance, there are two full-height bow windows, each containing three windows. The ground floor features tall glazing bar sash windows, while the first floor has smaller sash windows, all set in deep reveals with yellow brick flat arched heads. There are plat bands between the storeys in the bows, and the central sash on the first floor is also set in a shallow recess, mirroring the shape of the bows below.

The right return of the house has three bays, with the central openings being blind; the ground floor has a round arch and the first floor has a segmental arch. The windows closest to the front are in shallow recesses similar to those at the center front. There is a canted bay on the ground floor to the right. The left return has four bays, with blind openings towards the front, a segmental head at the center of the first floor, and a shallow recess to the left, as seen at the center front. The hipped roof has a central valley, with two cross axial stacks flanking the central bay behind the front ridges and two axial stacks on the rear pitch.

A later 19th-century block has been added to the rear, featuring a separate hipped roof and five bays, with a central round-headed staircase window on the first floor. Inside, the staircase has a moulded handrail and slim balusters. There are also mid-20th century Neo-Georgian outbuildings attached to the rear.
