Description
The gatehouse to Hilfield Castle was built around 1798-1799 by Jeffry Wyatt for G. Villiers. It is constructed of rendered brick and features a roof that is not visible. The design is in a picturesque Gothick style and consists of two storeys. The main entrance has a Tudor arch with a hood mould and portcullis, accompanied by an octagonal corner tower on the left that includes machicolations. To the right is a three-storey square-fronted section of the gatehouse. The first floor has sash windows, while the second floor features lancet windows, some of which are blind. All windows are topped with crenellated parapets. Above the gate, there is a statue set under a hood mould on a corbelled base. To the left, there is a wing wall and an octagonal pier. There have been additions to the rear of the structure, but the interior has not been inspected.
