Description

The library at Aldenham School was built in 1923 by M. Waterhouse for the Brewer's Company and is designed in the Neo-Georgian style. It is a two-storey building with five bays by three bays, constructed from stock brick with red brick and stone dressings, topped by a hipped tiled roof.

The entrance faces the School House and features panelled double doors with a dedicatory inscription above honoring the war dead. The entrance is adorned with a dentilled cornice that includes arms in a cartouche and a patterned arched head. The red brick surround projects with a hollow moulded round arch, and the building displays banded rustication along with a stone course at the impost level and a stone key.

The flanking bays on the ground floor have red brick niches with finely gauged brickwork and stone keys. A stone course separates the storeys. On the first floor, there are blind rectangular openings with gauged flat arched heads, moulded stone sills, and brick aprons, with the date inscribed on the right apron. The building has a continuous plinth and cornice, and a coped parapet with a segmental recess at the center, topped with four urns.

The return side has a five-bay arrangement with 24-pane flush frame sashes on the ground floor. The central section features an aedicular surround with a segmental pediment and jambs that flare out at the base, flanked by gauged flat arched heads with stone keys. The first floor has 16-pane sashes with an apron at the center. The plinth is made of plum brick, with a stone course between the storeys and a dentilled stone cornice. The coped parapet has two rainwater pipes separating the outer bays, and red brick quoins are present.

At the rear, there is a large multipaned round-headed window in a red brick surround with blocked voussoirs, flanked by niches and blind openings similar to the front. Urns are also present on the parapet. There are later additions to the left.

Inside, the library features an elliptical gallery supported by a timber Ionic colonnade, iron railings, and a Neo-Classical plaster ceiling. The building was constructed as a war memorial.
