Description
The Chequers Public House is a building that was originally two attached houses and has been a public house since around 1840. It dates from the late 18th century and has been altered and extended in the 19th century. The structure is likely timber-framed, with extensions in brick and plaster. It features a slate and tile roof and stands two storeys tall. The building has a double pile design with an earlier cross wing cottage to the right. There are four windows on the ground floor and three on the first floor, with some 16-pane sash windows. The original entrances have been blocked. The brick house has a double span, with a stack in the valley to the left and a front ridge stack to the right. The entrance is located on the right return. A wall plate is visible at the rear of the cross wing. There is a lower extension to the rear, likely replacing the rear portion of what was originally a longer cottage.
