Description

The Dower House, originally known as Fairlawn House, is a house built in 1749. Materials reused during construction are said to have come from the demolished canons at Edgware. The house has grey-header walls with red brick window jambs, rubbed brick lintels, and a cornice band. It is double-pile and three storeys high, with a basement. Five flat-headed recessed sash windows feature intact thick glazing bars. A notable Ionic wooden doorcase incorporates three-quarter columns, a pulvinated frieze, a modillioned pediment, and an acanthus sub-frieze. The interior reveals fielded paneling and includes a well-preserved, original baluster staircase located at the rear-centre of the house. An early 19th-century single-storey extension to the south features a canted bay window with weatherboarded casements.
