Description

This garden structure and pergola, built in the early 20th century, features square piers made of pale brick topped with square stone caps. The open roof consists of timber joists, with those above the piers having shaped projecting ends. It includes a range of eight open bays, with bay four featuring a slightly arched roof and bay seven having double piers that create a shallow cross plan, complete with a trellis frieze and an open timber dome. This bay serves as the center of the original structure, which previously extended in a matching style to the right. A heavy wooden bench, which is currently in storage, is associated with the structure and has armrests that are scrolled to match the kneelers of the house. The garden structure is included for its group value with The Leys, which was designed by George Walton in 1901.
