Description

Glebe Place is a former vicarage, now a house, with origins in the early 18th century. It was enlarged in 1825, and then refronted and altered in 1893, with further alterations occurring in the 20th century. The building is constructed of red brick, with the rear stuccoed. The roof is slate, hipped in style. The original front faces the left side of the building, with the overall arrangement characteristic of the early 19th century. It is two storeys and has an attic, with a six-window front, the right-hand windows being more widely spaced. An entrance is located in the third bay from the left, featuring a 20th-century, pedimented Doric porch. The windows are glazing bar sashes, set in moulded frames within shallow reveals. The ground floor on the right has a 20th-century bay window. First-floor windows have keyed segmental heads with moulded dripstones. Brick quoins are visible to the returns, with a plinth below. The eaves have a modillion cornice. There are six gabled dormers in the roof, and two stacks on the front pitch, flanking the entrance. The rear elevation faces the churchyard, featuring scattered sashes in deep reveals, with an 18th-century dentilled eaves towards the original front section. Two tall stacks are present on the rear, one projecting outwards. The left return shows the original front, with 19th-century windows facing the front, an 18th-century sash and a parapet to the rear; a ground floor conservatory and brick additions are also present. The interior remains uninspected. Historical records, as documented in Aldenham Parish Registers, refer to the property (W.Briggs and K.F.Gibbs, Aldenham Parish Registers vol.II 1910, p.338).
