Description

Edge Grove School is a former large house that has been converted into a school. It was originally built in the early to mid 18th century for J. Skey and underwent extensions and alterations around 1800, in the mid 19th century, and around 1910. The building is constructed of red brick with roughcast and features a slate hipped roof. It has three storeys and was originally designed with five windows. The ground floor has been extended forward and includes a glazed tetrastyle Ionic porch with flanking sash windows set in reveals. The first floor has sash windows with blind boxes, with the central window framed by Ionic pilaster jambs. The second floor has smaller windows, and there are giant pilasters at the return angles. The eaves are deep and boxed with modillion brackets, and there are end stacks.

Around 1800, three bay single storey wings were added, which were raised to two storeys around 1910. These wings project forward and feature sprocketed eaves and a rectangular bay on the right. The left return has weatherboarding on the first floor, along with timber balustrades and fluted pilasters. At the rear, there is a mid 19th century full height canted bay with a simple doorcase and first floor balconettes. The rear also includes one and two storey additions from around 1910, which have hipped and gabled roofs with ornamental bargeboards.

Inside, the building was largely remodelled around 1910. It features an Ionic entrance hall leading to a top-lit staircase hall, which has wrought iron balusters and an open well stair with an octagonal drum. The front rooms are panelled, and there is a ballroom on the first floor. There is a one storey link to the right that connects to 20th century buildings, which are not of special interest.
