Description

This group of three almshouses was built around 1882-1883 for Lord Aldenham. They are constructed of brick with sham timber framing and tile hanging, topped with a tiled roof, and designed in an asymmetrical Arts and Crafts style. The almshouses are single-storey. Nos. 1 and 2 have entrances facing High Street under separate gables, with No. 2 projecting forward and featuring an entrance in the side of a timber recess. Both have porches with four-centred heads and doors, while No. 1 includes a three-light bay window on the left with leaded lights and a chamfered brick base, and a similar window on the right of No. 2. The gables are supported by moulded arched braces and slightly project without the original sham timber framing. The ridge of the wing to the right is higher, and there are ridge tiles and a rendered plinth. The right side of the building has two gables, with the rear gable over the entrance to No. 3. A stack to the right of the front gable features two diagonal shafts and oversailing courses, with similar details as seen at the front. The left side has a tile-hung gable with an external stack to the rear, which also has two diagonal shafts and oversailing courses, along with another similar stack at the rear of No. 3. This listing includes No. 3 Almshouse on New Road, recognized for its group value.
