Description

The Smith Monument, located about 20 meters north of the chancel of the Church of St. James in Bushey, is a chest tomb dedicated to J. Smith, who died in 1753, and his wife, who died in 1741. The monument is made of ashlar in varying hues and slate. It features panelled corner piers and a moulded base adorned with foliate ornament. The long sides of the tomb display relief sarcophagi, with carved feet supporting winged putti and swags. On the northern side, there is an inscribed panel, while the western side displays arms in a cartouche, and the eastern side has an empty wreath. A slate slab covers the top of the tomb.
