Description

Otterspool House and The Flat is a former coaching inn, now student housing, dating from the early to mid-18th century, with 19th-century extensions and alterations, and a link to a late 18th-century house. The main house is built of red brick with a hipped slate roof. It originally had five windows, though the original front now faces the garden. A late 19th-century full-height canted bay projects to the left of centre, with the ground floor of the bay being cement rendered and featuring banded rustication. A mutuled cornice runs along the ground floor. There are traces of an arch over the ground floor on the left, potentially the original entrance. The windows are glazing bar sashes with flat arched heads, and there are two blind windows on the left side. The building has a dentilled timber cornice. An early 19th-century addition in red brick, set back from the main house, is located to the left, and includes an entrance with a semi-circular fanlight. The road frontage now features a 19th-century gabled porch, with the second bay from the right acting as the entrance. A central stack is present at the front, along with a cross-axial stack on the later addition. The remnants of a large, late 18th- to early 19th-century grotto is attached to the right return from the garden, extending over three sides of a rectangle. It was likely associated with the consumption of water from the nearby pool, a fashionable pastime at the time. There are two-storey and single-storey links to the late 18th-century house. A 20th-century porch addition is present to the right on the road. The rear features a dentilled timber cornice and an external stack to the front left.
