Description
This house, now divided into two residences, was built around 1890 by the architect Frederick Wallen for his own use. It is composed of two main sections: The Bricket Picture House and Little Bricket. The front section is constructed of red and brown brick with cement bands, while the upper floor features mosaic panels beneath a slightly jettied half-timbered design. The roof is covered with machine tiles. The front section is one and a half storeys high, and the rear section is single storey with attics.
The front part of the house has glazing bar casements, with small panes at the top and bottom of the ground floor windows. There is a square bay window carried through the eaves on the left side, and a central square window bay on the ground floor of the south gable end, with a trefoil-headed casement above. A timbered gable projects slightly. The upper floor of the front section is notable for a remarkable set of plaster reliefs, depicting late 19th-century sporting activities. These reliefs, in red plaster with brown and white backgrounds, are set within the timber frame and extend around three sides of the block. Scenes include a hunt, a four-man scull, and a wrestling match on the front elevations, continuing onto the north gable end. The south gable end reliefs are weathered and depict a cricket and rugby match.
The rear section, Little Bricket, lacks the relief decorations and features half-timbered gables and dormers, with a tile-hung attic on the north side. A projecting wing on the south side is believed to have been a chapel.
