Description

The Three Crowns is a public house located on Bushey High Road, dating back to the early 17th century. It was cased in the 18th century and has undergone alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building features a timber frame with brick casing that is whitewashed and roughcast, topped with a machine-tiled roof. It has an L-shaped plan with four bays and a two-bay cross wing on the left, along with a short projecting wing on the right. The structure is two storeys tall.

The entrance is located to the left of the center and has a round head, flanked by 20th-century additions. The central bays on the first floor contain a small two-light casement and a six-pane casement set in reveals. The short projecting wing on the right has a ground floor 20th-century window, a three-light casement on the first floor, and a hipped roof. The left bay features a bargeboarded gable of the slightly taller cross wing, with a ground floor 20th-century casement and a 12-pane sash on the first floor. There is a ridge stack on the left of the main range and a second stack on the rear pitch at the right end, with the roof hipped to the right.

On the left return, there is a rebuilt stack at an angle with the front. The ground floor has a canted bay and a 20th-century window, while the first floor has 12-pane sashes. A 19th-century stack is present at the rear gable end, and there is a one-storey 18th-century addition to the rear. Inside, the ground floor features ogee stop-chamfered binding beams and a queen post roof. The Three Crowns has been a public house since 1749.
