Description
The crane base and a short length of quay wall of the Stort Navigation, dating from the 18th or 19th century, are located 20 yards north of the road near the bridge on Station Road. The structure features a solid iron pillar that is 5 feet tall and tapers from a 15-inch diameter at the base. It has an expanded moulded head and a projecting central top pin. This base was used for a crane at a former wharf, situated about 5 feet from the water's edge, where the brick revetment is topped by a large 9-foot long York stone slab. This site holds archaeological significance in relation to the history of the Stort Navigation, which was initiated following an Act of Parliament in 1766.
