Description
An 18th-century house with 19th-century extensions, situated next to the sluice at Sawbridgeworth Mill. The house is timber-framed and weatherboarded. It has two storeys and attics, topped with a gambrel slate roof. External gable and lateral brick chimneys are visible. A two-storey timber-framed and weatherboarded rear addition, with a low-pitched slate roof and a brick gable stack, extends to the rear. A single-storey weatherboarded section with a slate roof is located at the east end, with a mid-19th-century extension projecting to the south. A contemporary two-storey extension is set back on the west end. The primary facade has two windows, with sash windows containing 8/8 panes. The ground floor has one window and a door to the right. The front door has a heavy frame and a moulded architrave with a flat hood supported by shaped brackets. The west extension is plastered to resemble ashlar, featuring a moulded cornice and frieze; it has paired sash windows with moulded architraves and 6/1 panes. A brick plinth is present. The east single-storey extension is similarly plastered to resemble ashlar and includes a wooden frieze and architrave to the overhang of the lead roof, alongside a row of three flush sash windows with moulded architraves and 6/1 panes, finished with a plinth of upright slates. The garden is revetted with heavy slate slabs.
