Description

Landguard is an 18th-century building that was remodeled as a Regency cottage ornée in the early 19th century. It is constructed of stucco and features a steep slate roof. The entrance front faces north and consists of two storeys with three windows. A central sash window above the porch has six-over-six panes, while the flanking sash windows have ten-over-ten panes. All first-floor windows are adorned with cast iron anthemion and basketwork plant holders on the sills.

The porch is enclosed and has a gabled design with scalloped slates, leaded light lancets, and a Gothic pierced bargeboard. The door is flanked by applied trellis with spearhead pilasters. The eastern end, which faces the approach, has a faceted hipped roof and a faceted bay with an eight-over-eight pane sash window on the first floor. Below this bay is a three-light semicircular pilastrade with three glazed openings and a continuous curving entablature, with the center opening featuring French doors.

Along the southern front, there is a lean-to vine house or conservatory. A higher tower is located at the northwest corner, which includes a three-sided oriel with a scalloped tile roof on the eastern face. This house was associated with Thomas Rivers in the first half of the 19th century, while Bonks Hill became the residence of Thomas Rivers junior. It was named 'Hamptons' on the Ordnance Survey map from 1879.
