Description

The George Fourth Public House, situated on an island at the junction of Knight Street and Station Road, has origins in the 17th century, although it has undergone significant alteration over time. The building is primarily timber-framed and now plastered, with a hipped slate roof. It features three flush sash windows with twelve panes per sash. The roof was raised in the 19th century, but original tie beams remain visible in the bedrooms at sill level. A chamfered ceiling beam is present in the Lounge Bar. A lateral chimney is located at the rear (north), and an external gable stack stands on the west side. A northeast wing, dating to the early 19th century, is plastered and has a slate roof, with a rear sash window containing eight panes per sash. A single-storey lean-to extension runs along the rear wall, featuring a gable chimney, a catslide slate roof, a large dormer, and sash windows with four panes per sash. A single-storey, shallow extension is located at the front (south), plastered with a slate front slope leading to a flat roof, and features wood casement windows with small panes of glass. The building is included on the list for its group value.
