Description
14, 16, and 18 Knight Street comprise a group of buildings dating to the later 16th century and the early 18th century. Number 16 is a two-bay house from the late 16th century, and number 18 is partially contemporary with it. Number 14 was built in the early 18th century. The buildings are timber-framed and plastered, with steep gabled roofs covered in old red tiles. They are two storeys and attics in height.
Number 14 has an internal gable chimney on the south side, a two-light 19th-century casement window in its north gable illuminating the attic, a moulded eaves cornice, and two early 18th-century flush box sash windows on the first floor, each containing 6/6 panes and thick glazing bars. A similar window is located north of the front door on the ground floor. A flat hood rests above the front door, supported by shaped brackets. A single-storey plastered rear wing has a roof of old red tiles.
Number 16 features a large gable facing the street, a large projecting 19th-century plastered oriel on the first floor, and a three-light square bay window of lesser projection below it. The windows are sash windows. It includes one early 19th-century sash window in the attic, with glazing bars, and four-light and single returns of later 19th-century sashes to the first-floor oriel. Similar sashes are present in the three-light bay window on the ground floor. A door with a bracketed hood is located below the oriel on the south side.
Number 18 contains a large gabled box dormer with an early 19th-century sash window. It has two windows on each floor, with sash windows containing glazing bars. A door is accessed by ascending three steps, beneath a moulded flat hood supported by shaped brackets. A low plinth is visible at the front. The group of buildings is important to the street views from the north.
