Description
36 Knight Street is a building that dates from the 17th century or earlier, with some features from the 18th century. It has a timber frame sitting on a rendered brick base. The northern end is weatherboarded, while the front is plastered. The roof is steeply hipped and covered with old red tiles. A large central chimney stack is located opposite the door, closer to the southern end, and has been rebuilt above the roof, appearing entirely on the front slope. There is also a lateral stack at the rear of the northern part of the building.
The front elevation features an eaves cornice and consists of two storeys and a cellar, with three windows. The outer windows on the first floor are three-light casements, while the central window above the door is a two-light casement. On the ground floor, there is a large window to the south that may be a 19th-century shop window with a modern casement. To the north, there is a three-light Victorian sash window, with a small 18th-century door located between it and the corner. The main entrance features a six-panelled raised and fielded door, with the top two panels glazed. This door has a heavy frame with an architrave and a board above it. The main door is similar but has an early 18th-century triangular pedimented hood supported by bold shaped brackets, along with a Greek-key frieze and heavy raking mouldings. There are two stone steps leading up to the door.
Adjacent to No 36, No 38 may have originally been a crosswing of this building. This property is part of an important group on the northern side of Knight Street.
