Description
Nos 1 and 3 on Church Street are an early 16th-century special purpose building that was originally unheated and featured a single large room on the first floor, along with a narrower rear wing at the northeast. It was likely subdivided for domestic use in the 17th century. The structure is timber-framed and plastered, topped with a steep old red tile roof that has hipped plastered eaves soffits. There are external gable chimneys built in English bond. The building has two storeys and four windows. The front displays panelled chevron pargetting, with late 17th or early 18th-century three-light wooden casements that are both mullioned and transomed. The door to No 1 is from the 18th century and features a bracketed flat hood, while No 3 has a 19th-century shopfront. The rear wing is timber-framed, with parts weatherboarded and plastered, consisting of two bays and an internal stack. Inside No 3, the ground floor ceiling reveals heavy roll-moulded cross beams and wave-moulded, bar-stopped joists and axial beams from the 16th century.
