Description

No 2 Church Street is a 15th or 16th-century, two-storey, two-window timber-framed house with plastered walls and steep old red tile roofs. It features an early jettied and gabled cross wing on the east side that extends to the rear, along with a near-contemporary two-bay section. The house has a large red brick central chimney built in English bond, which includes three diagonal engaged shafts and an additional shaft on the east side. A corresponding west gable was added in the 17th or early 18th century to create symmetry when the east jetty was underbuilt; this was reinstated in 1981.

On the first floor, there are 19th-century, three-light wooden windows with mullions and transoms. The central entrance features a four-panel flush door set within a 18th-century doorcase, which has a heavy frame with shaped brackets and a moulded flat hood. Modern mullioned shop windows are present on both the east and west sides. Inside, the crown post roof is exposed in the cross wing, and there is a brick fireplace with a chamfered four-centred arch on the ground floor. The rear part of the cross wing has a separate side stair and a gable chimney. This building is an interesting survival in the town centre.
