Description
33 Knight Street is an early 19th-century building, or potentially older, running along the street front. It comprises two distinct sections. The southern half is a three-window, two-storey stucco house with a large central chimney and a door slightly north of centre. It features a plastered plinth and cellar windows with gratings and cast iron grilles. The overhanging eaves shelter flush sash windows with moulded architraves, containing six panes to the first floor, and larger recessed sash windows with eight panes to the ground floor. A wide doorway has thin pilasters and small brackets supporting a flat, moulded hood, leading to a six-panel door with side lights and a narrow fanlight. The ground floor windows and door are offset to the north, likely to accommodate the substantial external gable chimney of the adjacent number 35. The northern half of the building has a weatherboarded upper section and colourwashed brickwork below, continuing the plinth. A carriageway is present at the north end, accessed via heavy framing and double plank doors, with a narrow doorcase and panelled door to the side. There are two flush three-pane hopper windows on the ground floor, and two square flush windows on the first floor, fitted with 19th-century six-pane, centre-hung sash windows. A slightly higher slate-roofed rear range extends to the yard, incorporating a polygonal bay. The building represents an unusual survival as both a house and business premises, contributing significantly to the street's character.
