Description
No. 38 on Knight Street is a 16th-century timber-framed building that features an exposed structure beneath a steep old red tile roof. It is two stories high and has a gabled facade facing the street, with the upper floor jettied out. The building has recently been restored, but photographs confirm its original arrangement, which includes close studding on both floors and the gable, tension braces halved over the outside of the studs on the first floor, and a heavy cill above a brick base. The roof is constructed with clasped purlins. There is evidence suggesting that this building may have been part of a larger structure, as it consists of two bays and shows signs of a four-light window on the front, with diagonally set mullions; the left-hand jamb and cill mortice remain.
