Description
The Queen's Head Public House is an early 19th-century stuccoed brick building located on Knight Street. It features a low plinth and a low-pitched hipped slate roof with overhanging eaves. The structure has a double pile plan, two storeys, and a cellar beneath the northeast room. There are two internal chimney stacks on the axial centre wall, with only the front rooms originally heated. The façade includes three windows: two recessed sash windows with 6/6 panes on the first floor, separated by a blank window recess. The central entrance door is flanked by triplet windows on each side, with flush sashes featuring architraves in the arrangement of 4/4:6/6:4/4. The centre window of the northern group has been adapted as a door. The central door is half-glazed and has a stucco moulded surround with an architrave and a full entablature adorned with corner scrolls. An iron bracket for a signboard is positioned off-centre to the south. Inside, there is a simple moulded fire surround and shelf in the southeast room on the first floor, along with four-panel doors throughout. The staircase features turned newels and a slender landing rail that is curved in plan, with stick balusters. The ground floor layout suggests that the building was originally designed as a public house. There have been alterations and a modern extension to the rear. The Queen's Head is part of an important architectural group on the west side of the street.
