Description
Shiptons is a house that dates back to the 17th century or earlier, with Gothic features added in the early 19th century and a modern rear lean-to. It is one and a half storeys tall, timber-framed, and plastered, facing north. The building has a steep old red tiled gabled roof with a large square chimney located one third from the west end, and it features three gabled dormers on the front wall plate. The layout appears to be a three-unit plan, with an unheated service room at the east end and the entrance door relocated eastwards. In the 1846 Tithe Award, it was described as a house and shop. The house has 19th-century cusped bargeboards with moulded pendants. There is a plank door in a raised plaster surround beneath the left-hand dormer, with similar surrounds for two windows. The ground floor has two-light flush wooden mullioned windows with cast iron lattice casements. The two-light dormer window features diamond lattice leaded lights, each with an iron opening light. Shiptons is an interesting small timber-framed house and is part of a picturesque group opposite the Plume of Feathers public house.
