Description
No. 88 on Gilston Lane is a house that was originally a block of two houses, built in the early 18th century and later divided and formalized in the early 19th century. The building is timber-framed and has two storeys, featuring two windows on the west-facing side, topped with a gabled old red tile roof and an internal gable chimney at the north end. The end walls and rear extensions are weatherboarded, with a lateral rear chimney at the north end and another at the south end, where it meets the rear wing.
The front of the house is plastered and has a symmetrical arrangement with one window on each floor, flanking a gabled rustic porch. The entire design is slightly offset to the south to accommodate the chimney's depth at the north end. The entrance features a six-panel flush beaded door within a moulded surround. The windows are two-light moulded wooden designs with ovolo moulded mullions and jambs, fitted with cast iron casements that have rectangular panes and pointed heads. Additionally, there is a cast iron pump with a double spurred spout located near the northwest corner. This house is an interesting example of 18th-century timber framing and is part of a picturesque group next to the Plume of Feathers public house.
