Description
The stable block at Walkern Hall, built between 1827 and 1830 by J. Pemberton for J. Izzard, is a notable structure located 30 metres to the northeast of the hall. It is constructed of brown stock brick featuring yellow gauged arches and has slate roofs with moulded wood eaves cornices.
The stable block is designed as an arcaded nine-bay single-storey range facing south, flanked by two two-storey pavilions at each end. The south front showcases round arched openings, with alternately framed and boarded doors that include cast-iron radial fanlights. There are tall cast iron framed windows with small panes, a central pivoted opening, and matching heads. The wall is set back behind a timber colonnade supported by four wide-paned unfluted Greek Doric columns. Each pavilion on the south face has a pedimented advanced centre featuring a triumphal arch motif, with double doors leading to the coach house and smaller side doors beneath flat arches. Above the side doors are small sash windows with five panes each.
The west pavilion is topped with a bell housed in an octagonal cupola with an ogee roof and a vane, while a circular clock dial is set in the pediment. The east pavilion features a gilded vane. The ground floor of the west pavilion has been altered to accommodate double garage doors. The north front remains unaltered, displaying a six-bay arcaded centre and a blind triumphal arch motif on the pedimented pavilions, along with three tall ventilators along the stable roof. The interiors of the stables are complete and in use, featuring cast iron framed partitions, a yellow brick herringbone floor, and iron mangers. There are also mounting blocks located in the yard to the south.
