Description

The Form Room Block at Haileybury and Imperial Service College is a school building constructed between 1905 and 1908 by architects John William Simpson and Ormerod Maxwell Aynton. It is made of grey brick with stone dressings and features a hipped slate roof. The building has an E-shaped layout aligned with the western front and consists of two storeys.

A prominent central feature, entirely in stone, includes a pediment and an arched octagonal cupola above. The projecting wings are three windows wide, with three windows on each side of a three-window centre. A groin vaulted stone carriageway, supported by square stone piers, leads to the main entrance, which has a pilastered Tuscan front. This entrance features a central arch and lower square-headed doorways on either side, each adorned with keystones and a porch above.

At the first floor level, there is a relief inscription in the frieze of the entablature. The building has sash windows in moulded surrounds, positioned between corner pilasters. A mutular cornice and triangular pediment with a scrolled cartouche, ribbons, and swags enhance the design. The recessed sash windows have flat gauged arches and 6/6 panes. A stone cornice wraps around the block, complemented by corner pilasters, a stone floorband, and a plinth.

Entrances to the form rooms are located within the vaulted aisles of the passage and in the courtyard between the deeply projecting rear wings. Notably, subsidence led to the removal of balconies in the courtyard before 1914.
